Millions of Americans proudly cheered for Dan O'Brien as he accomplished his long time mission of winning the Olympic Gold in Atlanta in 1996 in the Decathlon. Officially earning the title, "The World's Greatest Athlete," and becoming the first American to win Gold in the decathlon for USA Track & Field since 1976.

Dan O'Brien, whose name is synonymous with the highest of athletic achievements and success, has been honored with many prestigious Lifetime Achievement Awards.
 
1991 Tanqueray Achievement Award
1993 Jim Thorpe Achievement Award, outstanding athlete award given by the Board of Trustees by the United States Sports Academy
1994 Jim Thorpe Achievement Award, outstanding athlete award given by the Board of Trustees by the United States Sports Academy
1995 Inducted into the University of Idaho Hall Of Fame
1995 John Bennett Award, given to an American who exemplifies leadership and integrity and is dedicated to the support and promotion of the decathlon
1996 Dedication of the Track and Field at the University Of Idaho in honor of Dan O'Brien
2006 Inducted into the USA Track & Field Hall of Fame, Indianapolis
2007 Inducted into the Inland Empire, Spokane, Washington
